As a part of our vegan and gluten free Memorial Day weekend menu, we’ve created a vegan strawberry shortcake that’s low-cal and so tasty. Note: this patriotic, red, white, and blue dessert will also go over well with company for July 4th parties!

Tasty Vegan Desserts – Strawberry Shortcake

This is one of our foolproof vegan desserts that will have your guests feeling like they are in heaven – without the guilt.  Click here for inspiration on how to set the table as well as serve a complete vegan menu for Memorial Day.

Below, we’ve included the recipe for strawberry shortcake – one of our favorite vegan desserts – including ingredients and how-to steps.  This vegan dessert is easy to make and can even be prepared the night before, as you can put together the shortcake and cream filling ahead of time (see steps 1-11 below). On the day of, simply assemble the shortcakes when you are ready to serve (see steps 12-13 below).  Let us know how it goes by tweeting us a pic.  Enjoy!

Foolproof Vegan Desserts: Strawberry Shortcake

Ingredients:

1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

3 cups oat flour

2 tablespoons baking powder

9 packets of stevia

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1/3 cup almond butter

1 package extra firm silken tofu, drained

1/2 cup cashews, soaked overnight and drained

1/2 cup 100% pure maple syrup/ 1/4 cup 100% maple syrup

2 tablespoons lemon juice / 2 tablespoons lemon juice

pinch of salt

1 vanilla bean

1 pound strawberries, trimmed and cut into 1/4 inch slices

How To Make Vegan Strawberry Shortcake

1. Soak cashews overnight in water

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

3. In a glass measuring cup, whisk together almond milk, apple cider vinegar. Set aside for a few minutes until it curdles slightly and then add the vanilla extract.

4. In a medium bowl, sift together the oat flour, baking powder, Stevia, and salt.

5. In a small bowl, mix together applesauce and almond butter with a fork. Use the fork to cut the applesauce mixture into the flour mixture, until crumbly. Add in the milk mixture and stir until just moistened. Do not over mix. Tip: The mixture will not be that moist.

6. Use an ice cream scoop to scoop the scones out onto the baking sheet. For a bigger scone, use a bigger scoop. Bake for 20 to 24 minutes, or until a knife inserted through the center comes out clean.

7. Allow scones to cool on baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

8. Store in a cool dry place until you are ready to assemble the strawberry shortcakes.

9. Combine the tofu, cashews, maple syrup, lemon juice, and salt in a blender. Puree until smooth.

10. Slice the vanilla bean in half lengthwise from end to end with a sharp knife and scrape the seeds into the blender.  Blend again until smooth. Tip: The mixture will not be thick at this point.

11. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Chill for several hours or overnight in the refrigerator or until firm.  Tip: If you can prepare this one day in advance, the vanilla bean whip will have the maximum time to become firm.

12. Stir together the strawberries, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl and let sit for 30 minutes.

13. Assemble the shortcakes. slice the top off and add a dollop of cream with a few strawberry slices, then place the top back on top. Place strawberries and blueberries on the plate to decorate.

This Mother’s Day, Sunday May 10th 2013, show your Mom how girly, sweet, and loving you are with a Mother’s Day Manicure done in pink, albeit claw nails, just for her.  Mother’s Day is one of the most special days of the year for women with children because it reminds them about the beauty their child has brought to their life.  Mother’s Day is also a day for the child to show their Mother how much they love her and appreciate everything that she has done for them throughout their life.  If you have The Claw Nails and don’t want to get rid of the sharp shape in order to receive Mom’s approval – I can completely empathize with you – give your nails a Mother’s Day manicure by having them painted in a pretty pink hue, just for Mom.

April showers bring May flowers and floral dresses, which is why I recently wore my own floral dress while out and about in San Diego.  With flowers blooming and fabulous weather upon us, color is a must-have in a ladies outfit, especially if the color contributes to a floral print.  Why?  Because, pretty colors and floral prints improve our mood and put a smile on our face.  For a Saturday of running around town, meetings with wedding vendors, and lunch with the in-laws, this Christina Karin spring 2013 floral dress fit the bill!

Below, I’m at Java Earth Cafe in Pacific Beach wearing the floral “Anna” dress (shop here) by Chicago designer, Christina Monley of Christina Karin.  Mixing tomboy with sophistication, I accessorized this floral dress with a baseball cap, wedge sandals, chunky woven belt, pink leather jacket and Hermes Birkin (thanks to Mom!).  Per usual, I’m sporting The Claw nails.

I have been sporting The Claw Nails this spring and decided to venture out even more so by designing my manicure after the opening credits in the TV Series, “Nip Tuck”.  The Claw could perhaps be this season’s most outrageous nail shape and when paired with Television’s most controversial TV show ever, Nip Tuck, you have quite the fashion statement!  It’s surprising how well my red and white Claw nails matched with my outfits all week – from a white, boxy Emerson Fry dress (see here) and a red, bandage Herve Leger dress (see here), to a colored blazer outfit (see here).  The key with these nails is to keep your outfit simple and coordinate with complimentary colors – red, white, black, yellow, cream, etc.  I was excited to see how many folks noticed my nails and made a comment about them…I received comments from multiple old ladies at the gym, my doctor, every family member, and fans online!

Wondering how to wear a cropped leather jacket?  When wearing a dress, one often needs a shorter jacket in order to prevent the dress from looking frumpy.  This is where the cropped leather jacket comes in.  There is a time and a place for these cropped jackets and sometimes, they simply cannot be substituted. I’ve combined the white and gray patterned Topshop Blanket Skater Skirt with the sheer Topshop Moto Tipped Collar Chiffon Shirt.  Pairing this look with a black, platform, suede Prada boot creates a cool and casual look that’s appropriate for daytime hangouts, but also nighttime festivities.  Transitioning this look to evening is super simple by layering with a casual coat, like the leather sleeve, military-inspired jacket that I’m wearing.  The key tip about how to layer during spring is to wear a lightweight top for day and always have your lightweight jacket available for when temperatures drop.

One special trend that has lasted longer than expected is the floral jean trend, so let me show you how to wear floral jeans and to transition them into spring.  Floral jeans may have been for the “fashion very forward” last year, but this year, floral jeans are the easiest pant to throw on!  See more ways to wear floral jeans here.

There are some ladies who choose to stay away from floral jeans simply because they do not know how to style them or are not sure what goes with them.  Well, here is the trick! Wear floral jeans by choosing a color that is already in the pant and then wear a blouse or top in that color that’s found in the jean. I’ve chosen a blouse in black (shop here – Topshop Moto Tipped Collar Chiffon Shirt), which is found in the jean I’m wearing.

In order to really rock floral jeans, you can mix prints and get a little edgier as I have done with my leopard print Lanvin for H&M rhinestone pumps.  I have accessorized with Rubey G jewelry and a blue Celine Phantom.  I always love a boyfriend blazer to keep a look relaxed, especially when walking up and down Wall Street in La Jolla — giving me the option to pop into Puesto Mexican Street Food for a salmon salad or Whisknladle for grilled Snapper sandwich.

I’d like to officially introduce to you to what I call “The Claw” – sharp, pointy, out-of-this world looking nails that are so outrageous.  My guess is that you’re either hating these talons or you’re loving them.  I LOVE them!  If you hate these talons, I promise, you’ll soon change your mind. The claw looks hard to handle, dangerous, and illegal for the office, but I must say that these triangular talons are not as scary as they look!  I’m able to apply makeup, wash my face, brush my teeth, open pop cans, and other normal daily tasks.  My cat, Mister Montecore, appreciates being scratched behind his neck with the claw.  Plus, I can use my sharp looking nails as a source of defense, if necessary.

For a lunch look in La Jolla, California the leather trim skater skirt can be made feminine by pairing with lace and florals.  Leather has been a big trend and will continue to be popular throughout the spring!  Now, we are seeing pieces of leather used on garments in a mixed media fashion.  Below, I’ve styled an outfit that incorporates leather trim.  My look is dressy for lunch in La Jolla, and yet still appropriate for the night scene at Barfly a little later on in the evening!

In my lunch to bar/club ensemble, the black Topshop Skater Skirt ($70) with faux leather trim can be worn with a variety of tops.  I’ve paired the skirt with the Hinge Mixed Media Lace Sleeve Shirt ($78) – a preppy, button-down, pinstripe blouse with lace sleeves – in order to balance out the skirt, which is short and flirty.  To cover up and keep warm from the cove’s cool breeze, a boyfriend jacket with leather trim sleeves is a great way go to! The Trouve Faux Leather Trim Menswear Jacket ($88.80) that I’m wearing has faux leather trim sleeves and buttons down the center.  To accessorize and play up the femininity of my outfit, pointy black pumps by Lanvin for H&M and a floral petal wristlet bag by The Lizz Russell Collection (local San Diego designer) complete the look.  For jewelry, Rubey G always does the trick and looks perfect with the beading on the wristlet of the little purse.

The animal face trend is still going full force and as we transition from winter into spring 2013, you will be sure to see tiger sweatshirts, rottweiler dog tees, and cat face shirts all over the place – or at least on the cool people.  Have you seen Kenzo’s green tiger sweatshirt that has been immensely popular and spotted on attendees at every fashion week?  Of course you have!  The animal face trend can be a subtle, embroidered representation of the beast on one’s shirt – as I’ve shown below – or it can consume the entirety of one’s top.

Below, I’ve styled an embroidered tiger print sweatshirt by Topshop at Nordstrom (shop here) with a Devlin skater skirt (shop here), layered for extra warmth with a pink leather jacket, and accessorized with a pink Balenciaga “Velo” giant hardware bag.  My B Brian Atwood heels are pony hair with a thick wooden heel.  Although in San Diego, CA the weather can easily change from 70′s by day to 40′s by night, so it’s necessary to be prepared with layers, as I was the other day while dining in Little Italy at Underbelly. This outfit is comfortable, yet fun and chic, and easy to throw on for a cute look that takes you from day to night. Grrrrowl.

A printed sundress can turn into a sporty business look by adding a colored blazer.  A feminine sundress that is ideal for brunch or strolling through town with flip flops can be just as ideal for a dressed up look with the right jacket (rather than your go-to cardigan).  Colored blazers have been a celebrity favorite the past few seasons and always come in handy for us ladies!

This tribal, flippy, printed dress by Topshop at Nordstrom (shop “Tiger Lattice Print” dress here) is fantastic on its own, but to dress it up, I added a wide waist belt, Giorgio Armani red tuxedo jacket, and Prabal Gurung for Target red wedge. To make the outfit a little edgier for the evening, a clutch is definitely in order. I am wearing a black watersnake Alexander McQueen clutch with the iconic Michael Jackson white Swarovski glove. If you do not have a colorful blazer, this wardrobe piece is a must-have addition this spring, as it will come in useful with a multitude of outfits.

Printed pants and denim have been hugely popular in floral and polka dots, but now camo jeans are the hippest print – being subtle, but still funky! Have you been wearing printed pants a lot this year and feel like it’s time to give them a rest?  Well, printed pants are certainly not out, however, prints can regularly be updated and refreshed.  For those less daring or too scared to try a loud printed pant, a dark camo pant can be safe, as it is almost black, and you can style it as if it is a black denim.  These Habitual ‘Amalia’ Digital Camo Print Stretch Jeans with zippers at the bottom are such a great denim for winter, tucking them into boots and then great for the spring transition with flats or heels to show off the zipper.

On this weekend day on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach, it is especially chilly for San Diego!  A fur is absolutely necessary towards the end of day as we head over to Zinc Cafe for an espresso.  These camouflage pants are styled with a green and neon leopard-printed top, Versace for H&M green printed scarf, Rubey G armstack, mink coat, and Ruthie Davis Studded pumps. Camo jeans have a safari feel, so glamorize with leopard print (as I did) or get preppy with a hunter green Barbour jacket.

One of the top spring 2013 trends we saw during NYFW back in September was black and white.  This timeless color combination never goes out of style and can be paired together in so many different ways for spring.  Whether wearing black and white patterns, geometric shapes, bold referee stripes, or color-block, there are many ways you can sport this timeless color trend for spring 2013.  Another easy option is simply to wear an all-white heel with an all-black outfit, just as i did for a house party I attended recently.  Below, I’ve kicked off the black and white spring 2013 trend by wearing a black silk romper and tuxedo blazer with white heels, nails, and black and white crystal headband.

I’m all about simplicity, so when I am able to find a little jacket that’s simple, yet so exquisite, I’m all over it!  A jacket that’s embellished with fur, sequins, and embroidery is the investment piece that I was after this winter season – and I found it!  Son Jung Wan’s fall 2012/winter 2013 collection is filled with understated outerwear garments that have so much pizazz, like the little zip-front, short-sleeved jacket that I’m sporting below.  (See full Son Jung Wan Fall 2012/ Winter 2013 runway collection on Elle.com, here). This winter 2013, I recommend that you find an embellished jacket that can be worn in many more ways than 1.  The jacket need not be flamboyantly hued, but rather, opt for an embellished jacket in understated hues: gray, camel, silver, or gold that you can see yourself wearing day or night.

Almost interview time! I am admiring my rosegold pumps.

Since I am waiting for my interview, I’ll show you some of my snacks for the weekend that I posted on Instagram. These protein bars will give me sustained energy, while the juice and sugar will give me an instant boost.  I am really excited about the Dig N Dips! I dont think I have had dipping sugar with a stick since swim team in 4th grade! Also, I looked for pixie sticks at Ralphs and couldn’t find any! Are pixie sticks no longer?

Miss Nubry was called (for the interview)…

I walked in the room with another girl and I walked to the left to face a panel of 4 judges and stood on the X. The other girl went to the right to stand on another X to face a panel of 3 judges. The questions came 100 miles per hour for all of 2 minutes and then I switched to the right side of the room for another 2 minutes of questions.

3:20pm: Phew! Just left my interview! They asked me what my pet peeve was? … Having to glam up in the men’s restroom is not fun!

3:40pm I have to quickly change back into a casual outfit for more rehearsing for tomorrow. I am wearing red snake print skinny jeans and a KAIN sweater top. (see details above)  I am loving booties especially peep toe booties.  They are great cause you feel like you are wearing a boot, but you arent dressed for the cold winter! ~ Perfect California style!

5:00pm What’s for dinner? Grilled chicken, mesclun green salad, steamed vegetables.  I was so surprised at how healthy the food was!

I am lucky that my interview was yesterday, because some girls had to wait until this morning.  Rachel tweeted that she was ready for her interview at 7am!

Day 2 - Liveblog from Miss Nubry - Gretchen Hackmann at Miss California USA 2013 Pageant

4:30am wakeup call! I am never going to get used to waking up this early.  I am so excited for the final day of the competition and the Miss California Finals!

The Miss California USA 2013 pageant is quickly approaching us!  I do my own makeup all the time for photo shoots on Nubry, but I figured that stage makeup is probably very different than fashion editorial makeup, so I scouted out the very best makeup artist for the job.  Lou Flores, acclaimed makeup artist and America’s Next Top Model hopeful, specializes in makeup for stage (evening gown and swimsuit) as well as makeup for interview with the judges. I drove up to Los Angeles the other day, from San Diego, to get my own one-on-one lesson with Mr. Flores – prepared with pen and paper and my little makeup bag.  For several hours, we went over the process of applying makeup to enhance most notably the eyes, eyebrows, and cheekbones.  During my sesh, I learned how to apply foundation and blend concealer with a beauty blender (see how to apply flawless foundation here), apply bronzer for depth and blush for brightness (see how to get high cheekbones here), accentuate eyebrows with pencil and white shadow (see how to get bold eyebrows here and how to shape brows here), create a larger eye through eyeshadows, fake eyelashes, and black liner, as well as creating a natural lip with nude liner and pink lipstick (see how to get perfect pink lips here).  Wait until you see the difference in my face!  My key takeaways for stage makeup are listed below.

How To Do Stage Makeup For Miss California USA 2013:

1. Apply foundation to face, making sure to add concealer below the eyes, on the top of the nose, chin, and forehead, as you want these areas to appear lighter so that they pop on stage.  TIP: Use a “Beauty Blender” to blend product!

2. Add bronzer below cheekbones and around hair line with bronzer brush to create depth.

3. Apply blush above bronzer line in an apple shape with large blush brush for a pop of color.

4. Accentuate brows (something I never do) by penciling them in and then lining underneath with a white shadow.

5. Apply eyeshadow to eyes, making sure to darken the crease of the eyes so to create a larger eye.

6. Apply fake eyelashes!!!

7. Line eyelashes with black pencil.

8. Line lips with pencil and apply a nude lipstick or color of your choice (not shown, but you get the point).

How To Do A Glamorous Holiday Updo On Your Own Hair

Before: We started with 1 day of unwashed hair.

Step 1: If your hair is clean, using dry shampoo can help to make it more course, stickier, and easier to style. Make a center part and place the headband comfortably on your head.  Comb the hair in front of the head band down so that it is not stuck under the headband. Allow enough hair in front of the headband to braid it in the next step.

Step 2: Take a section of hair behind the headband and tease the hair with a teasing comb.  Take another section behind the teased section and tease again. Continue until the top of your head is significantly teased.  (It will look messy).

Step 3: Gently lie the teased sections down and gently take the teasing comb to smooth out the top of the poof. You will have a nice big hairdo at this point.

Step 4: French braid the hair that is on either side of the headband until the top of the ear. Then braid down close to the end.

Step 5: Tease the bottom of either braid so that the braid does not come undone.  This way, you wont need a hair elastic to maintain the braid.

Step 6: Bring the braids from each side together and tie a plastic elastic tightly. Pull tight

Step 7: Take the long hair and cup it in both hands in a rolling motion. You will be taking the cuped hair in your hands and tucking it overtop of the braid until you are satisfied with the roll shape created.  Keep cupping the hair and tucking it into the braid.

Step 8: Use a lot of bobby pins to secure the rolled up hair.  Place bobby pins along the braid by grabbing the hair in an up-down motion so that the bobby pins cannot be seen.

Step 9: Create a more voluminous look  by taking the stick end of the teasing comb and placing it under the hair and pulling out gently to poof.

Step 10: Spray hairspray dramatically allover for a longlasting look.

Dressing for the day and night can be a challenge if you only get dressed once and then need to be ready for all occasions. Happy hour is always early and evening events and get-togethers always pop up, unexpectedly keeping you out in the evening – especially around the holidays. What should you wear to casual holiday parties without looking too dressed up? How do you wear a dress with boots during December?  Or even, what is a great jacket to own this season that goes well with a dress?  These are all questions you may be asking yourself now that we are approaching the end of 2012 and we have the answers.

We show you how to take one dress (Ashlee Brooks Amelia dress) and wear it two different ways for day and for night.  Oxblood is immensely popular for fall/winter trends, very festive for the holidays, and yet it is so classic. For the outfit, we combined two Ashlee Brooks pieces to create the dress seen below.  The oxblood mini Cora skater skirt, also styled here, is worn under the Amelia tent dress, which we tucked into the front of the skirt and left the back long. The oxblood silk pieces in the outfit come together as a dress, but can also be worn as separates.

DAY - The first outfit below, for day, includes cream, chunky, stack heel, platform boots that are neutral and do not compete with the beautiful oxblood color of the silk garments.  The fringed, camel colored poncho sweater is worn overtop for a casual, relaxed, and cozy day look.  Even in SoCal, where we photographed these looks, a tight is always a nice way to pull an outfit together, especially during the fall/winter seasons.  These nude fishnet tights are barely noticeable, but definitely add a bit of edginess to the outfit. To finish the look, an oversized, structured handbag is a must for toting around work-related gear and other belongings.

NIGHT - For the evening look, the second outfit below, we have paired oxblood with black for a royal and classy look.  We have replaced the beige boots for black, platform, crocodile-embossed pumps and replaced the camel poncho with a black, wool, peplum blazer jacket (Ashlee Brooks Janice Coat).  A well-tailored, detailed jacket like this is warm and so stylish to always have on hand during the winter season to make any outfit instantly chic, whether paired with jeans or a dress.  With all of you peplum lovers out there, this is a must-have jacket! Of course, the evening Chanel purse with gold hardware is perfect to complete this look.

Leather pants – and the more commonly seen fall 2012 trend, leather leggings – are slick, sexy, and most times vixenish, but they do not have to be reserved for those nights out at the Dream Hotel a la Olivia Newton John in Greece type of occasions.  Leather pants are so cool for day time and we show you below how we’d wear ‘em.

Effortlessly chic attire for day is a cinch when you have a statement piece that is paired with a staple piece. In our case, the statement piece is the jacket and the staple piece is the leather trouser.  The leather pant is a wonderful basic to invest in, because not only is it a simple black pant, but it’s also got an extra edge because of the leather aspect.  Some days, it’s fun to feel like Kim Kardashian, but sometimes you just want to be casual like Kate Moss, so a leather trouser, rather than a leather legging, is the way to go.

A few tips on leather pants: look for “leather track pants” or “leather jogging pants” which are naturally more casual and a looser fit than a skintight leather legging.  It may help you to think of leather trousers more like you would jeans, which can be worn many different ways and all the time! The “mixed media” or duo fabric tweed jacket we’re wearing below is by Son Jung Wan from her fall 2012 runway collection.  The details on this jacket are incredible!  The tweed has silver metallic threads woven through for a brocade-like effect and the braided sweater sleeve says, “I am so casual“.  The back of the jacket buttons to the top so you can play around with how much you want to button-up or un-button.  We’ve added a fur shrug with sequin details for added warmth, also by Son Jung Wan.  The rhinestone crystal smoking slippers, by Sam Edelman, are needed to balance the tweed jacket and leather pant. A silk, white ruffled blouse is worn underneath with a Chanel crystal flower chain belt wraped around the waist.  The Chanel CCs and the large brooch-like rose at the back take the place of the brooch worn typically on the lapel of a jacket.

This fall season studs should be ruling every aspect of your closet.  Nothing is off limits when it comes to adding studs, but it’s important to think about where and how you incorporate studs into your OOTD (outfit of the day). 3 Different Ways To Wear A Leather Mini Skirt:

1. Equestrian Style

The polka dot trend was huge in fashion during 2012 and it quickly transformed into dots that were of mini motifs like hearts, elephants and even horses.  The equestrian style is always a classic style in the fall and winter, making one appear to be headed to the barn to groom their horse or take a ride.  The equestrian style is easy to do without having to be head-to-toe jockey in riding boots, jodphurs, blouse and jacket.

For this look, we have taken inspiration from equestrian riders with the horse print motif navy blouse and paired it with an A-line leather mini skirt. Instead of pants, the skirt is a feminine way of making this outfit less show and more casual or fun.  Equestrians wear leather chaps, boots and gloves, so this skirt helps to add to the look we are going for.  The jacket we have chosen has gold buttons that are tied together with a gold chain-embellished belt.

2. Cozy Style

Below, we’ve styled an office-appropriate outfit by starting first with the most important garment, the dress.  This Son Jung Wan fall 2012 collection sweater dress (pictured left on the fall 2012 runway at NYFW) in chocolate brown has several lightweight layers and crocheted center front.  The dress is so interesting to look at because of its multi-dimensional, diaphonous layers, yet it is understated because of the rich color and modern cut and doesn’t draw unwanted attention.

We finish off this simple, yet curious, dress by slipping into chocolate-colored, patent Louboutin heels and layering with a cream-colored, wool overcoat.  For extra warmth, we’ve accessorized with a metallic gray fur stole, also by Son Jung Wan.  As the weather becomes even chillier, this dress can be further layered with an undershirt, sweater, cardigan, and/or heavier jacket.  Adding stockings and knee-high boots would further winterize this dress.

What To Pack For A Weekend In Miami: Fall/Winter Edition

During October and November, weather in Miami is mid to high 80′s.  The forecast always shows scattered thunderstorms, but we wouldn’t worry about that, there’s really no rain to speak of in Miami – this rain will pass in 1 hour (normally) -  Just sun!

Did you know neutral colors that include pretty shades of red, peach and pink are a big trend for the fall season?  It’s true!  On the lighter end of the color spectrum, we’re grabbing for peach and on the darker end, we’re opting for a deep rouge or burgundy.  Dallas designer, Ashlee Brooks, has based her fall 2012 collection on the rich, luxurious hue of the season known best as “oxblood”.  On a side note, we love that color name, don’t you?  It’s a dark, dull, reddish-brown or blood red.  Well, as the hottest color of the season, we must all be sure to incorporate oxblood into our fall/winter wardrobes.  And with the help of Ashlee Brooks, here’s how easy it can be!

To display and prove that pretty, neutral peach hues are appropriate for fall, we have taken a peach leather jacket and paired it with an Ashlee Brooks Collection A-line mini skater skirt in “merlot” or oxblood.  We’ve completed the look with a pair of peach crocodile-embossed smoking slippers, peach silk scarf, and brown Balenciaga “work” bag with giant gold hardware.  On the beauty end, we’ve applied an oxblood lip and manicure.  An easy look to put together that’s to die for during these chilly months!

As we are now beginning to wear our fall season essentials more frequently like leather jackets, cashmere sweaters, heavier scarves, skinny jeans, and leather pants, we need to remember that we continue to wear our silk maxi skirts too!  These delightful wardrobe floor length skirts can be layered appropriately for the fall season with some simple tricks that we’re going to show you. A silk maxi skirt without the high slit allows you to wear heels, ballet flats or even a sandal if you’re a SoCal gal living in the likes of La Jolla, CA, for example. Now, for the fun part! What to wear for a contemporary art gallery hop, followed by tapas and a glass of rioja, should be an artistic and comfortable outfit.  For our gallery hop ensemble, we chose a neutral hued, animal printed, no-slit, silk maxi skirt.  We paired the leopard mermaid skirt with a slinky, nude tank top and layered it with a cream colored, leather jacket with fur trim, by Son Jung Wan.  Now, when bouncing around the galleries in town, we’ll be equipped for the changes in temperature.

People often say, “oh, that looks sooo Chanel” whether or not that something really is or is not Chanel.  To celebrate Coco Chanel’s August 19th birthday, we were inspired to create an outfit that Coco Chanel would have loved. Our “Chanel” outfit is not actually a Chanel design at all…but looks like Chanel…and for budget-conscious fashionistas, this type of intelligent dressing can be very important!  What do we mean?  When we think of Chanel, immediately we think of a very polished, classic, and sophisticated look that includes the colors black and white (or cream), a tailored jacket, a pair of round sunglasses, and a flawless complexion.

To get started with our Chanel look, we began at the foundation with the lovely “Victoria Posh” dress by Sugarlips that features an A-line skirt, sheer neck insert, and lace back.  We built upon our little black dress foundation – that Coco Chanel made so popular in the 20′s – with a pair of the “Scarlet” t-strap black and ivory spiked heels by Sam Edelman, cream leather motorcycle jacket with fur shoulders by Son Jung Wan fall 2012, black half-tint sunglasses by Chanel, black statement headband, and black watersnake clutch by Alexander McQueen.  Makeup was done flawlessly and finished off with rich rouge lips – which is right on trend for fall 2012!

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance celebrates attention to detail, a commitment to excellence and the resulting pleasure to be found in what is, quite simply, the best.  So, what do you wear? That is the unbeknownst question.  Not to worry though, we have your wardrobe worries covered.  The elite auto show takes place on the beautiful Pebble Beach golf course.  As a place where only the most beautiful and rare automobiles are invited to appear, we strongly feel that one’s attire should match the celebratory mood surrounding these wonderful, rare-breed cars, but also, of course serve some functional purpose.

The stylish summer outfit that you debut on the exquisitely groomed lawn should answer your comfort and ease-of-movement needs, as you will most likely be doing a day’s worth of walking and standing underneath the warm California sun.  Think attire that is befitting of a golf course and then up the ante.  Short little silk golf shorts paired with a neon collared, sheer, silk blouse and sophisticated sunglasses will suffice.  Yes, you may bring a pair of swoon-worthy python mint heels (such as the pair below), but please be sure to also include a pair of jeweled sandals, just in case your feet tire.

3 Ways To Wear A Leather Jacket For Summer:

1. Light Printed Jean: pairing leather jackets with a light printed jean along with a white tank is ideal for those afternoon dates and summer concerts in the park. Finish off this look with a cute strappy sandal for a breezy summer feel as well as convenience for quick stops at the beach with that summer fling!

2. Printed or Floral Dress: a lightweight dress is the summer hymn sung over and over that will never tire or get old. By adding the light colored leather jacket, it creates a slight edge and urban feel to the ideal brunch outfit. We’re all about brunch – those delightful new hot spots, fresh squeezed juices and weekend splurges – and the outfits that accompany the weekend occasion. Selecting an espadrille or a funky wedge can amp up this look.

3. Cut-off Jean Short: a fab printed tee and a mid high heeled ankle boot always work well with cut-offs.   Try taking an old t-shirt and turning it into a DIY project by cutting and ripping – adds vintage appeal and makes it your own. Add a chunky necklace and roll up the sleeves of the leather jacket and you’ll have a perfect go-to outfit for any casual outing.

It’s no secret that ombre and dip dye hair trends have been all the rage this spring/summer 2012, but what you may not know is that the whole process is much more complicated than you think.  We went ahead and jumped right into the fad back in March by going after a lilac hair effect, ombred from blonde at the top to light purple towards the bottom.  Seeing as we’re not hair experts, we didn’t realize that it would be impossible to achieve the tone of purple we were drooling over without first bleaching our already blonde locks even blonder.  Actually, our hair stylist(s) didn’t realize that either. We say stylists because it took 3 salons and hundreds of wasted dollars to only arrive back at square one, in worse shape than we started.

We’re not here to depress or crush the hopes of future ombre or dip dye hair contenders, we totally love the look and so do celebs, but we wanted to be frank with you before you step into a salon hoping for a product that you probably wont get before finally leaving the salon depressed and poor.  #FashionGirlProblems.  Below, we’ve put together a calender of events as to how going after lilac ombre hair went down for us.

How I Never Actually Got Pretty Lilac Purple Ombre Hair

Salon #1: With positive thoughts and excitement, I walked into an Aveda salon and asked if they could give me my purple ombre hair that I was obsessing over. I had blonde hair at this point.  I left shortly after with wet hair that was in the shade of dark dark dark purple hair. I was in a hurry and couldn’t wait for the blowdry, but I was so anxious to see my hair dry into light powdery lilac shades. It didn’t. It dried and turned into red/brown/dirty hair.

Rating – FAIL

Salon #2: Totally pee-oed, I decided that the stylist who had worked on my hair had no idea how to achieve the color I wanted, so I went on my merry way to another salon in a high end hotel. I was completely confident that my new stylist could fix this mess because she assured me she could, so I went under the color bowl again for a day of havoc. After bleaching my poor head for way too long so that the red/brown/dirty color dispersed, I had a yellow/orange/hideous colored mane that was nappy and knotty.  The stylist contintued to assure me she knew what she was doing and when I finished I had more than half of my head colored in a deep eggplant, almost black shade. Ahh!

Rating – Super FAIL

Deeply saddened, beyond depressed, and extraordinarily angry, I gave up on my hopes of achieving beautiful lilac ombred ends and decided to face the reality that I would have a head of almost black ends combined with blonde top until it faded and grew out.  Fortunately and to my surprise, over the course of the next week, a lot of the dark color washed out and turned into somewhat of a lilac color mixed with red tones. It wasn’t great, but it was much better than my harsh eggplant ends and I decided I could live with it.

Salon #3: Having vowed to myself and my frantic Mother never to trust someone with ombreing my fragile hair again, I caved in after arriving in SoCal and allowed a stylist to talk me into doing a “beautiful blonde to lilac ombre hairdo”.  After 3 days, yes I said 3 days (28 hours in the hair salon chair), I left in tears and now told myself that I would never dye or even highlight my hair ever again and couldn’t wait for my natural hair color to grow back.  You see, there was a ridiculous amount of color deposited on my hair from before which meant that my hair wasn’t going to do the normal things that hair does with color.  During my visits to salon #3, my porous hair went from shades of blue to green to a final allover yellow product…and then my ombre was gone. Ghaaah!

With summer polo season well underway, our Sundays are way more fun than they used to be. Who attended #SundayFunDay “Opening Day” at their polo club? We sure did! We’re here to heavily promote your attendance at these ultra suave horse games, not only because they involve drinking vino all afternoon (this is true) but also because they are high fashion social events that attract the most stylish ladies and gents in town.  Sounds like a blast, right? Totally is!

Now down to the nit and grit of it…what to wear to a polo match? (By the way, this isn’t the races…significant difference!) We recommend pretty sun dresses in floral prints or clean white, long silk maxi dresses, dresses or skirts with short-front long-back hems, vibrant or pastel hues, wide brim hats – not the ones that Kate Middleton wears to events in England, but rather the kind that Beyonce sports in St. Barts – and of course, statement sunglasses that turn heads.

Regarding shoes, never NEVER wear stilettos. Stilettos are for those who don’t know any better. Pull out your summer wedges or slip your feet into embellished sandals.  You see, the polo games take place on grass…which grows atop dirt, which means if you arrive in stilettos you will sink into the ground with each step and people will stare. Another reason why you will want a flat soled shoe is because at half-time you get to parade into the middle of the polo field for “divot stomping” – an event that enables you to stomp grass back into the dirt that the horses kicked up during the game. It’s really fun!

On a hot day, even a maxi skirt made of lightweight fabric can be overwhelmingly warm, so why not opt instead for the short-front long-back skirt also known as a “swingback” skirt?  The nice thing about this skirt is that it incorporates both a mini flouncy skirt, which is nice for daytime, and also a long maxi skirt, which is nice for an impromptu occasion that requires dressier attire – such as popping into the Museum of Art.

When you are looking for comfortable and unique items for jetsetting or resort vacation, the short-front long-back skirt is a great item to own.  Just imagine yourself wearing this sexy skirt as a beach coverup in Ibiza, the Greek Isles, or Miami.  Oh yah, sounds nice!  We have taken a bright colored printed paisley swingback skirt by River Island and paired it with the same orange, yellow and pink colors in the skirt through the incorporation of a hot pink Balenciaga Giant Velo purse, a yellow ASOS iPad case, leopard silk scarf, hot pink linen scarf, and bright yellow tank top. With summer here, all we can think about are pastel, printed, and neon-colored denim. It’s the hardest-hitting trend this season and we have to say that we’re so excited to rock really bright pants instead of our normal denim…no offense to our trusty go-to jeans, but it is afterall summer time and pops of color equate to sunshine and happiness in SoCal and the rest of the United States!

Style icon, Kristen Stewart, thought exactly that when she stepped out in a pair of bright yellow printed Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere jeans.  She complemented her wild bottoms with a simple white top and relaxed tuxedo blazer to balance the look, but also to fit her rock-solid personality. Totally inspired by Kristen’s look – who wouldn’t be?  – we felt the need to follow suit and rock our own pair of printed jeans!

Below, we’ve styled a pair of snake printed denim leggings for summer in SoCal. When mixing prints, it’s always best to choose one color that occurs in both the top and the bottoms so that the two different pieces end up complimenting each other! Being print happy, we chose a floral bustier top with hints of the fire red found in the snake printed pants and completed the look with a pair of leather loafers and understated vintage jewelry. Springtime, known as the season of rebirth, is a time to try out new trends.  Some new trends coming to life this spring are animal-printed polka dot tops in elephant print, heart print, and horse print, button-down shirts tied at the natural waist, and bright-colored flowy skirts.
