Shortly before the Balenciaga models appeared on the runway yesterday during Paris Fashion Week, all screws broke loose! That’s right, the creme de la creme of fashion, special guests, and celebrity A-listers all toppled to their bottoms…so we heard.
While awaiting the start of Nicolas Ghesquiere’s Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2012 collection, the sleek black benches began crumbling beneath their highness’s thin bodies, causing immediate chaos, confusion, and camaraderie? Vogue UK’s editor Alexandra Shulman, one of those amongst the crumbling benches explained afterward,
It created quite the spirit of camaraderie.
Interesting…so my question is, was this planned? I can’t imagine Balenciaga would ever publicize that they had secretly intended to cause an uproar before the show and force Anna Wintour and Salma Hayek to “stand” front row center at their show. This has definitely never happened before – standing front row center at Paris Fashion Week like they do in Church – so it does make a good conversation over tea. Unfortunately, during the middle of the night the US folk missed the Twitter craze about the cheapo Balenciaga benches, but Fashionista, as always, scouts the best tweets out for us!
So after all of the hoopla, standing ovation, and sucking up the standing part, Balenciaga debuted their stunning, strange, want-worthy spring/summer 2012 collection. As The New York Times puts it,
But there was other breaking news at the Balenciaga show on Thursday: The clothes were some of the most approachable and wearable the designer Nicolas Ghesquière has yet created.
…And the rest is history!
