The New York and Paris fall 2012 runways presented last February were filled with a new take on the choker necklace. Several designers gave the 90’s necklace an update by adding unique details and using unexpected materials. Some were simple, while others were oversized and dramatic. They were definitely eye-catching on the runways and as a result are the standout accessory for this fall season.
At NYFW, Derek Lam featured lots of feminine silhouettes and simple prints. He also kept accessories subtle and paired one look with a silver chain choker. This was one of the smaller and more basic chokers seen on the runways. The Yigal Azrouel collection also featured simplicity. It didn’t have a lot of detail, but it stood out because of its large size. This industrial style choker is made of chrome metal and was definitely one of the heavier ones seen on the runways in NYC.
In Paris, the overall theme was avant-garde and lots of drama. The Manish Arora fall show was anything but boring. One of his chokers that stood out was a thick red one that was cohesive with his geometric mirror-patterned theme and cutting-edge makeup. At Lanvin, there was a mix of colors, but the collection was not as eccentric as Manish Arora. The focal point of the show was the gothic-inspired tiger choker that was also used on a belt. This choker definitely made a fashion statement with a roaring panther sculpted on a black leather choker.
Lastly, Givenchy’s collection featured strong tailoring and a unique mix of feminine and masculine pieces. While some looks had high collars, others were seen with wide leather chokers. The chokers definitely gave the looks some edge and provided an eye-pleasing contrast to some of the softer looks.
These chokers might seem a little over-the-top for everyday life, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying out this comeback trend for fall! Are you daring enough to stand out in one of these bold chokers this fall/winter season?
